Maria Jastrzębska was born in Warsaw, Poland and came to the UK as a child. She co-founded Queer Writing South with John McCullough and has co-edited various anthologies including Queer in Brighton with Anthony Luvera (New Writing South 2014). Her four poetry collections and several pamphlets include Everyday Angels (Waterloo Press 2009), At The Library of Memories (Waterloo Press 2013) and The True Story of Cowboy Hat and Ingénue (Cinnamon Press/Liquorice Fish 2018). Her drama Dementia Diaries toured nationally in 2011 with Lewes Live Literature. She co-translated Elsewhere by Iztok Osojnik (Pighog 2011) with Ana Jelnikar and Justyna Bargielska’s The Great Plan B (Smokestack 2017). Her work is widely anthologised including in Hallelujah for 20 foot Women (Bloodaxe 2015) and Wretched Strangers (Boiler House Press 2018) and features in the British Library project Between Two Worlds – Poetry and Translation. Her poem ‘The Subsongs of Crow’, written for the collaborative project Snow Q, which recently received an Arts Council Award, was Highly Commended in the Forward Poetry Prize 2019. She is a Poetry School tutor.
